The recent independent review of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), conducted by Sir David Grant has now been published by Department for Business Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Findings of the review are fully supported by government Ministers and UKRI’s leadership. Recommendations include investment in harmonising IT systems, clarifying roles and responsibilities within UKRI and with BEIS, and demonstrating the outcomes from application of funding.
The review noted the important role that public sector research establishments (PSREs) and ‘catapults and institutes’ have to play in the UK’s Research, Development and Innovation strategy, but noted the challenges associated with accessing funding (including on overheads) which acted as a barrier to these organisations being a fully utilised asset.
