The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest multidisciplinary research organisations. Part of Research Councils UK, we are funded by the government to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of world-class scientific research.

Our vision is to maximise the impact of our knowledge, skills, facilities and resources for the benefit of the UK. We seek to achieve this by:

  • Providing access to several large-scale, world-class scientific facilities, such as the ISIS neutron facility, the Central Laser Facility, and Diamond Light Source
  • Managing UK interests in international collaborations including CERN, the European particle physics laboratory in Switzerland, and ESO, the European Southern Observatory, to ensure long-term access to these world-leading facilities
  • Running an active outreach programme to engage young people with science and inspire the next generation of researchers, making our high-profile research accessible to young people
  • Playing a major role in developing two Science and Innovation Campuses – in Daresbury, Cheshire, and Harwell, Oxford – promoting academic and industry collaboration with access to world-class research facilities and scientists, office and laboratory space, business support, and an environment which encourages innovation
