Abbas is a chartered engineer with over 10 years of experience in management of R&D, engineering and technology transfer and training projects.
He started working at TWI in 2007 as a project leader working on advanced joining technologies and non-destructive testing methods.
He joined TWI’s joint venture innovation partnership with Brunel University London as a Research Fellow and to pursue a PhD. During his time at the University Abbas developed high temperature sensors which were successfully commercialised and his research was shortlisted by the Welding Institute for the Richard Dolby – Rolls-Royce Prize.
In 2014 he led the technical operations for the National Structural Integrity Research Centre, a £150 million industrially led post-graduate programme. In 2016 he became the Industry Sector Manager for electronics and sensors, working across TWI technology groups to develop technologies and solutions to serve the needs of industrial members.
In 2017, he took on the role of Business Development Group Manager in TWI’s global training and technical services, and also initiated the Southeast Asia Skills Enhancement Programme which is a £5M training initiative sponsored by TWI and Lloyd’s Register Foundation.
He is currently head of public funding and regional development and also leads TWI’s technology transfer programme.
