ITRI is an organisation dedicated to supporting the tin industry and expanding tin use. It has more than 70 years experience in tin research. It is largely funded by the major tin producers and smelters which comprise its membership.

In 2003 ITRI moved its international headquarters to new purpose-built laboratories located close to St. Albans in the United Kingdom . These provide first class facilities in which to carry out research and are located close to the international airports of Heathrow, Stansted, and Luton.

ITRI works with the tin industry to achieve the following objectives:

• Develop, and commercialise technologies which have the potential to establish new markets for tin.
• Support existing and emerging tin uses.
• Develop global networks to expand activity in tin research and to evaluate future opportunities and threats to tin use
• Improve and communicate the quality and availability of tin data and statistics.
• Implement strategies to deal with the challenges of global legislation and to position tin as an environmentally acceptable and sustainable metal.

Through its subsidiary company ITRI Innovation, the organisation operates a commercial laboratory carrying out testing and troubleshooting work, principally for the electronics industry.
