National Nuclear Laboratory

The National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) offers a breadth of technical products and services covering the complete nuclear fuel cycle. We operate from six sites in Cumbria, Lancashire, Cheshire, Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire. Work is mainly focused around sites in the North West of England. We are the second biggest industrial employer in West Cumbria.

With over 10,000 man years of nuclear fuel cycle experience, coupled with world-leading nuclear R&D facilities, we deliver experts and technologies that ensure the UK nuclear industry operates safely, efficiently and cost-effectively. We have the capability to handle nuclear materials, including uranium, plutonium, spent fuel and highly active waste.

NNL is taking a central role in co-ordinating UK nuclear research and development and maintains close links with academia and industry. We support Government in safeguarding nuclear skills and capabilities and advise on strategic decisions and key strands of activity. NNL provides a full range of commercial products and technical services:
