The role of APHA is to safeguard plant and animal health and welfare as well as public health, protect the economy and enhance food security through research, surveillance and inspection.
APHA primarily works to prevent and control endemic and exotic diseases and pests in animals, plants and bees. Its range of functions includes specialist laboratory and scientific services, research and consultancy, and the surveillance and management of animal, plant and bee disease controls such as import and export controls, certification and inspections.
The agency also has global responsibilities. It is the national and international reference laboratory for a wide range of animal diseases, and protects CITES listed endangered species through its wildlife registration and licensing role.
