Dr Derek Craston became the Government Chemist in June 2008. He is also the Chief Scientific Officer and Managing Director of Science and Innovation at LGC, a life sciences research, product and services company.
Derek joined LGC in 1991 and has carried out a variety of research and development roles relating to chemistry and the bioscience and to standards and new methods of analysis. He has a degree in Chemistry from the University of St Andrews, a PhD from Imperial College, London, for research into enzyme electrochemistry and a Hon DPhil from Kingston University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and sits on the Committee of Division V of the International Union for Pure and Applied Chemistry.
